CHILLIN' FOR CHARITY

A key component of the business industry is not-for-profit. JDC West embodies this through its segment of charitable events. This year JDCW Okanagan is looking to partner with a few charities, centered within the Okanagan region, to build a strong sense of community. A headlining charity for JDCW Okanagan is Cystic Fibrosis Canada (CF). Every 1 in 3800 people are born with Cystic Fibrosis. It drastically affects the lungs and the digestive system and can contribute to other diseases. With continued charitable involvement towards advancements in the medical field, 90% of Cystic Fibrosis cases are now treatable. However, the 10% still need help which leads us to the JDCW Okanagan ‘Shine Day’. Shine Day is an annual event where people shine within various events to raise money for the furthering of research and development in Cystic Fibrosis treatment. So ‘why do you shine’?

As part of JDC West, there is another charitable event called ‘Chillin’ for Charity’. This specific aspect of the competition reflects the pillars of adaptability, perseverance, and discovery as the passionate students participate in engaging with the community whilst embracing the adversity of the Canadian winter. UBCO was involved with Hands in Service’s “Touch of Christmas” event last year where students helped set up and clean up the venue for a local farmers market.
